Ohio University Southern’s Student Social Work Association mobilizes for flood relief

As communities in Kentucky and West Virginia grapple with the devastation caused by severe winter storms and flooding, Ohio University Southern’s Student Social Work Association (SSWA) is stepping up to provide much-needed relief.

The student-led organization has launched an urgent donation drive to collect essential supplies for families displaced by flooding, power outages and winter weather. The effort comes as both Kentucky and West Virginia declare states of emergency, with widespread damage to homes, roads and infrastructure.

In press releases from the Kentucky Office of the Governor and the West Virginia Office of the Governor, officials emphasized the urgent need for assistance as thousands remain without power and clean drinking water is in short supply. Emergency responders, including the National Guard, continue to work around the clock to conduct rescues and restore infrastructure.

SSWA is urgently requesting space heaters, propane heaters, blankets and generators to help those without heat stay warm as temperatures continue to drop. These items are critical for families facing freezing conditions.

Additionally, donations of bottled water, menstrual products, diapers and baby formula are needed to help meet basic daily needs. Nonperishable food items that do not require cooking will also be especially helpful for those without power.

For cleanup efforts, SSWA is collecting bleach, cleaning supplies, nitrile gloves, trash bags and safety glasses. These supplies will assist families in clearing debris and sanitizing their homes.

To provide warmth and protection against the elements, socks, gloves, hats and Hot Hands are needed. Building and repair materials such as wood, tarps, tools, storage tubs, flooring, insulation and roofing materials will also support long-term recovery.

"At Ohio University Southern, we believe in serving our community in times of need. Our students and campus community are stepping up to help, demonstrating the compassion and leadership that defines them," said Ohio University Southern Dean Dr. Deborah Marinski. "We encourage anyone who is able to contribute to this effort, whether through donations or spreading the word, to do so. Every act of kindness helps."

Donations can be brought to the Office of Student Services at Ohio University Southern. The first distribution of supplies will take place Saturday, Feb. 22, and SSWA hopes to gather additional donations by Feb. 27 for a second distribution.
