STEM Discovery Day set to inspire the next generation of innovators at Ohio University Lancaster Campus

Ohio University Lancaster Campus is excited to announce STEM Discovery Day, a one-day, hands-on program designed for 6th to 8th-grade students (ages 11-14) who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This event, co-chaired by Pamela Kaylor, Ph.D., and Jackie Tudor, Ph.D., will take place on Friday, May 9, 2025, and is completely free for students, schools, and all attendees. Between 350 and 400 students are expected to participate in this unique event, which offers the opportunity to explore potential STEM careers through engaging, interactive learning experiences.
“The work that the Ohio University is doing to educate today’s youth on careers in the STEM field is critical for the continued growth of these industries, and Cirba Solutions is honored to partner with them for STEM Discovery Day,” said Karen Gay, manager of Community Engagement at Cirba Solutions (cirbasolutions.com). “As an organization that is in the STEM field, we recognize how important it is for future generations that students are introduced to different areas of study at a young age and have the opportunity to participate in this critical hands-on learning.”
STEM Discovery Day will start at 8:30 a.m., with the program officially kicking off at 9 a.m. Students will be inspired by a keynote presentation from experts at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI.org), one of the nation’s leading science centers. Following the keynote, participants will engage in interactive sessions led by industry professionals, University faculty and high school educators, offering valuable real-world insights and skills in fields like engineering, technology and mathematics. The event will conclude by 1:45 p.m.
“We are thrilled to partner with COSI to bring such an exciting and engaging opening presentation to our students,” said Dr. Kaylor. “This event is designed to ignite curiosity and show students how science and technology can be both fun and impactful in shaping their future careers.”
With the support of over 50 volunteers, more than 20 high school STEM educators and University faculty and staff, the event promises to be an enriching and inspiring experience for all participants.
The day is made possible through the generous donations of local sponsors, including Cirba Solutions, Fairfield County Foundation, Midwest Fabricating, Messerly Dental, OHIOHealth, Fairfield Medical Center and Cristy’s Pizza. Their support ensures that this exciting event remains free for students, schools, and attendees, providing a valuable learning experience for all.
“We are deeply grateful for the generous support from our sponsors,” said Tudor. “Their contributions allow us to offer this hands-on event at no cost to students or schools, making STEM education accessible and exciting for the next generation of innovators.”
STEM Discovery Day aims to inspire students to consider future careers in STEM fields while developing critical skills that will serve them well in the years ahead. Students will have the chance to connect with professionals, mentors, and peers, helping them envision the wide range of opportunities available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“We want students to leave this event not only with new knowledge and experiences but with a sense of empowerment and excitement about the possibilities in STEM,” Dr. Kaylor added. “This day is all about building confidence, fostering curiosity, and inspiring students to pursue careers that can shape the future.”
