Summer faculty development opportunities at OHIO

Ohio University faculty interested in incorporating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and/or experiential learning in their courses and teaching strategies are invited to join two self-paced asynchronous offerings. Full-time instructors receive stipends for completion of these opportunities.

Teaching and assessing experiential learning certification

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of Ohio University’s educational philosophy, fostering transformative, hands-on experiences that prepare students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. This certification program empowers educators to design, implement and assess experiential learning opportunities that align with OHIO's values and strategic goals.

The Teaching and Assessing Experiential Learning Certification comprises four components:

  • Knowledge Acquisition – A set of asynchronous learning modules delivered through Canvas.
  • Implementation – Application of learning in new, redesigned, or existing courses.
  • Assessment – Formal evaluation of course design and delivery.
  • Reflection – Instructors’ self-report on implementation effectiveness and next steps.

Faculty will be eligible for the first $500 of their stipend after completing the first two components and for the second $500 after completing the final two components.

This teaching certification is designed as a self-paced, open-entry, open-exit offering. Once the first component goes live, faculty may begin the experience at any time.

The Teaching and Assessing Experiential Learning modules open June 2.

Teaching and learning with GenAI: An asynchronous institute

During the spring semester, the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment launched an asynchronous AI in Teaching and Learning Institute.

This modular course introduces instructors to strategies and pathways for leveraging generative artificial intelligence in courses and in day-to-day administrative tasks.

The course assists participants in developing course policies and other instructional materials, as well as considering assessing their use of AI as an instructional strategy, AI from a disciplinary perspective or AI to personalize learning.

A carousel of mini-modules covers topics like “AI Writing Assignments,” “Generating Rubrics,” “AI Quiz Question Generation,” “Generating Case Studies,” “Creating Interactive Class Activities” and “AI Mash-Up,” among others.

Thanks to a Konneker grant, the first 80 full-time faculty who complete all elements of this course will receive a $250 stipend. After they implement the AI enhancements developed as part of this course, assess the results of their teaching intervention and submit those results, they receive an additional $250 stipend.
