Snowflakes, soldiers, and sugar plums: 'The Nutcracker' returns to OHIO Eastern

The magic of the holidays comes alive once again at Ohio University Eastern as Oglebay Institute’s School of Dance presents "The Nutcracker," celebrating its 25th anniversary this season. The beloved ballet will be performed by Oglebay Institute’s Youth Ballet Company on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the OUE Theatre.

Complete with dancing flowers, a flurry of snowflakes, and Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, this enchanting production invites audiences on a magical journey through Clara’s Christmas dream. Adapted from E.T.A. Hoffman’s classic tale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," the story follows young Clara as her nutcracker comes to life, leading her into a world of wonder filled with toy soldiers, swirling snow and dancing fairies.

This year’s production features a talented cast of beautifully costumed dancers, including 12 graduating seniors who will take their final bows in this milestone performance.

“We’re delighted to provide a space where the community can experience the magic of the arts right here on our campus,” said Richard W. Greenlee, dean of campus and community relations. “Bringing 'The Nutcracker' to OHIO Eastern allows families to enjoy a memorable holiday performance close to home, while celebrating the creativity and dedication of young artists in our region.”

For 25 years, Oglebay Institute’s "Nutcracker," has been a hallmark of the holiday season in the Ohio Valley, bringing families together to celebrate art, music and community spirit.

Oglebay Institute Director of Dance Cheryl Pompeo shared that ballet performances like "The Nutcracker" not only inspire young audiences but also introduce them to the expressive power of movement.

“Kids get excited about the characters and music they already know,” Pompeo said. “But they also get to see these familiar stories presented in new and beautiful ways. Dance allows them to experience storytelling through emotion and artistry.”

The performance at OHIO Eastern continues a proud tradition of collaboration between the University and regional arts organizations, reinforcing a shared commitment to fostering creativity and cultural enrichment throughout the community.

Tickets can be purchased on the night of the performance or ordered in advance online at www.oionline.com.
