Ohio University introduces new ‘OU’ mark for use on fan merchandise

As part of Ohio University’s move earlier this year to a one-logo system featuring the arched OHIO, the University has introduced a new “OU” mark, embracing a longstanding fan affinity for the familiar moniker.

The new OU matches the design style of the arched OHIO, aligning it with the one-logo system, and the logo will be used exclusively for merchandise, fan engagement and special brand projects.

The University has partnered with Court Street retailers College Book Store and Ohio is Home to introduce the mark in Athens during Homecoming Week. New “OU” merchandise will hit shelves at these partner locations in Athens beginning Monday, Oct. 5, and exclusive “OU” products will be available in Peden Stadium during OHIO Football games and Jefferson Marketplace and the Bobcat Depot on campus.

“While third parties have occasionally published OU marks over the years, this will be the first time Ohio University has formally utilized an OU mark since 1940,” said Vice President for University Communications and Marketing Robin Oliver. “The arched OHIO mark will continue to be our primary logo across both academics and athletics, but we also want to recognize and celebrate our many University stakeholders who know and love us as ‘OU.’ We’re thankful for our retail partners who are helping us bring that to life.”

The new OU mark was designed by Ohio University alumnus Aaron Harden, who serves as OHIO’s senior director of creative and brand. Multiple designs were shared with focus groups of OHIO alumni working in advertising, marketing and branding in corporate and agency roles across the United States for feedback before selecting and finalizing the OU logo.

More on OHIO’s one-logo system and guidelines for use of the OU mark are available on the University’s brand website at ohio.edu/logo.
