For more than a century, the Ohio University Marching 110 has captivated audiences with its precision, energy and unmistakable style. Now, the "Most Exciting Band in the Land" has earned yet another national distinction as one of the nation's top 10 college marching bands by College Raptor.
“The Marching 110 is one of Ohio University’s crown jewels — an experience that shapes our students while bringing together our entire community,” said Ohio University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez. “Beyond its talented student musicians, it serves as a powerful convener for students, faculty, staff and alumni, united by pride, tradition and a shared pursuit of excellence. This recognition reflects the impact our students have both on the field and across Bobcat nation.”
More than 100 years of tradition and excellence
Originally founded in 1923, the Ohio University Marching 110 has evolved from a small, student-led ensemble into one of OHIO’s most iconic traditions. Today, the band includes more than 250 student musicians representing a wide range of academic disciplines from across the University. While the band's membership has grown significantly over the decades, its name remains a tribute to its historic roots, as the number "110," which originally referred to the number of members in the band, now symbolizes the 110 percent effort expected of every member during rehearsals and performances.
The Marching 110's unique style and swagger have also earned them acclaim far beyond Athens. Over its storied history, the band has performed in more than 40 NFL halftime shows, appeared in three Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades, marched in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and performed internationally in Canada, Ireland, Italy and France. The band has also appeared at New York City's Carnegie Hall.
Introducing a new home for the “Most Exciting Band in the Land”
As the band enters its second century, another milestone is quickly approaching.
Later this year, and for the first time in its history, the Marching 110 will have a permanent, purpose-built home for rehearsals and training. Ohio University announced plans in 2024 for a new Marching 110 Practice Facility and Hurley Field, a state-of-the-art practice facility designed specifically to meet the needs of the nationally recognized ensemble.
The new space is a game-changing addition for the Marching 110; it's also anticipated to serve as a model facility within the Mid-American Conference and for marching bands across the country. Located along South Shafer Street and adjacent to OHIO’s Chessa Soccer Field, the practice facility includes:
- A high-quality turf field designed for reliable rehearsals across all weather conditions
- A director’s tower, providing ideal vantage points for instruction and drill work
- Restroom facilities to support both band members and visitors
- Additional amenities created specifically to enhance safety, efficiency and the day-to-day experiences of the Marching 110.
The project was made possible through a transformational gift from Marching 110 alumni Shawn Hurley and Tracey (Hanna) Hurley, whose initial $1 million commitment launched the fundraising campaign. Earlier this year, in celebration of "110 Day" on January 10, the Hurley family further expanded their support through an additional $200,000 gift.
For many alumni, this new facility represents more than a permanent rehearsal space – it also marks the proud realization of a decades-long dream.
An Alumni Band and Network unlike any other
Both the Marching 110's Alumni Band and Alumni Network are among the most passionate and engaged communities in the Ohio University family.
Thousands of former members remain deeply connected to the band long after graduation, returning annually for Homecoming celebrations, alumni performances and special events. Many describe their experience in the 110 as transformational, citing lifelong friendships, professional networks and a shared commitment to excellence that continues long after their final performance.
Such enduring connections have helped fuel broad support for the Marching 110, with a wide range of alumni, parents, friends and fans who continue to contribute in numerous ways to help support and enrich the band's legacy.
Supporting the Marching 110
Those interested in supporting the Marching 110 are encouraged to consider making a gift to the band and/or the construction of the new facility.
Such support will positively impact the 110’s student musicians, the new practice facility and ensure that future generations of Bobcats can continue building upon one of Ohio University's most recognizable and celebrated traditions. With continued national recognitions like those from College Raptor, a growing roster of talented student performers and a new permanent home on the horizon, the future of the Marching 110 is brighter than ever.
