Registration now open for Faculty as Mentors program

Pre-registration is now open for the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment's newest Teaching@OHIO faculty development certification.

The Faculty as Mentors: Reimagining Learning at OHIO program was developed by faculty for faculty. The professional learning portion of this certification opens in June 2026. All OHIO faculty and staff interested in this topic are invited to register.

Mentorship is often expected, but not formally taught, supported or recognized in faculty roles. The Faculty as Mentors Certification recognizes the central role of faculty mentorship in fostering student success and advancing Ohio University’s Dynamic Strategy. Faculty mentors guide students’ intellectual growth, professional development and personal resilience. This certification develops, supports and rewards faculty who embed mentoring practices into their teaching, advising and scholarly engagement.

You can learn more about the program in this short video.

Content for this scaled experience was developed by OHIO's 2025-26 Mid-American Conference Advancing Leadership Development Program fellows and faculty pedagogical experts focusing on mentorship. They created the course to elevate research on and disciplinary distinction of faculty mentorship. They include:

  • Maryam Ahmed, professor and chair, Biological Sciences
  • Rebecca Dingus, professor, Marketing
  • Katie Hartman, vice provost for faculty development
  • Chao-Yang Lee, professor, Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences
  • Dwan Robinson, professor, Educational Studies
  • Amy Taylor-Bianco, professor, Management
  • Jay Wilhelm, associate professor, Mechanical Engineering

This certification joins a suite of deep faculty development opportunities offered in both scaled and application formats. Faculty as Mentors learning is delivered through a Canvas course in five modules that include:

  • Mentoring as Teaching
  • Learning Pathway Transparency
  • Habits of Mind Formation
  • Integrative Experience Design, Dialogue and Feedback
  • Mentorship in Content

Featured throughout the course are OHIO faculty exemplars sharing how they mentor students.

All Teaching@OHIO certifications are developed by faculty supported by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment and its collaborators and comprise four main structural components: Knowledge acquisition, implementation, reflection and assessment.

Full-time faculty who complete the knowledge acquisition component and develop an implementation plan receive a $500 stipend. Those who implement, assess and reflect on that plan receive an additional $500 stipend.

Individuals who pre-register will see the Canvas course automatically appear in their Canvas dashboard when it is released.
